Have you just received your driving licence? Are you about to leave home for the first time to attend college or university? Are looking for a set of wheels to drive you and your friends around before and after school? Or are you the parent or guardian of someone who fits into one of the above scenarios? Chances are if you have answered 'yes' to any of the above questions then you are probably in the market for an affordable car, preferably one that will be reliable, cheap to run, and will be thought of as being 'cool' enough to be seen out and about in. This begs the question - if you are looking for a suitable student car, what should you look for? What constitutes a 'good deal' and which is going to last for longer than a year or two?
One of the most important things to look out for when you are searching for a student car is the size. Although it may be tempting to go for a larger car (a five door or SUV) it is far cheaper and more fuel efficient to stick with a two-door. Two-door cars can still fit more than two people (the seats slide or fold forwards to allow entry into the back seat), are smaller cars and will therefore usually have smaller engines and require less petrol to run. Furthermore they will fall into a lower insurance bracket, carbon charges division road taxation bracket (once these changes and increases come into effect). If you can find a two-door model which is a few years old you should be able to balance the cost of the car with the size and the age and come out on top with a good deal.
